From Retrieval to Results: Andrew Simpson on Innovation at ReleasePoint
ReleasePoint has been delivering smart, secure medical data solutions for over 25 years. And for 20 of those years, Andrew Simpson, Assistant Vice President & Senior Account Executive for Life and Disability Accounts, has been right there—helping shape the company’s evolution and building lasting partnerships with some of the country’s top insurance carriers.
When we sat down with Andrew, we learned a few things fast: he cares deeply about helping ReleasePoint clients integrate next-level medical data solutions, has a passion for music, and can quickly name his favorite coworker—proof that diplomacy is alive and well.
In this Q&A, Andrew opens up about ReleasePoint’s evolution as a medical data provider, the value of data for speeding up disability claims decisions, and how ReleasePoint differentiates itself in a growing field.
Andrew, tell us a little about your role at ReleasePoint.
Andrew: I oversee business development and account management for our life and disability clients. I’ve been with ReleasePoint for 20 years, and I’ve worn many hats—from operations to leadership to sales. It’s been quite a journey, but at the heart of it, I work closely with carriers to ensure they have the data they need to make faster, better decisions.
How has ReleasePoint evolved over the past 20 years?
Andrew: A lot has changed. When I first started, we were essentially a retrieval company. We’d get medical records by fax or mail and physically scan and send them to clients. Now, we’re doing that digitally—and also ingesting structured EHR data, using APIs, and building integrations that power real-time delivery. There’s a strong push toward digitization and automation, and we’ve been right there helping carriers evolve with the changing tech landscape. We now transform all medical data sources – including image-based records – into structured data which empowers underwriters to review records quickly and supports carriers’ AI and automation initiatives.
Q: What’s one thing you wish more people understood about ReleasePoint?
Andrew: Some carriers still think of us as just a retrieval vendor, but we’re a medical data platform. We’ve invested heavily in technology, integrations, and automation. We work hard to meet clients where they are—whether they need legacy retrieval support or are ready to go all-in on digital data. Our flexibility is a key differentiator – we’re easy to work with and provide an unmatched solution in the marketplace.
Q: What sets ReleasePoint apart from other medical data providers?
Andrew: I’d say our biggest strength is our ability to combine deep industry knowledge with strong client relationships. We’ve been around for over 25 years, and we deeply understand the nuances of medical data in the life and disability insurance markets. That longevity gives us insight into what clients need and how to tailor solutions. Additionally, I’d highlight:
1. Our people: We have deeply experienced, responsive teams who truly care about client outcomes. Our CEO Derrick Halvey has instilled in us that we’re here to help solve carrier problems, and that mentality is ingrained in our culture. Our Customer Success team is exceptional—constantly monitoring quality, responding to questions, gathering feedback, and ensuring clients receive exactly what they need.
2. Data structuring and delivery innovation: Medical record retrieval may be considered a commodity by some, but we don’t see it that way. We continually invest in improving our technology, interfaces, turnaround times, and provider connectivity. That investment helps us deliver high-quality, accurate data—fast. But we go further: we’re transforming how medical data is delivered by bundling retrieval with AI-powered, RP Insights structured insights. Every step of the way, we focus on data quality. That kind of innovation is powerful when you’re trying to move a claim or application forward quickly and confidently.
3. Vertical integration and security: We’re not just aggregators—we’ve built direct integrations with the two largest EHR systems, which gives us greater control over the data we retrieve. That means better quality, faster access, and more flexibility for our clients. Unlike vendors that rely on third-party sources, we own every part of our product stack. That independence allows us to tailor solutions to our carrier partners’ unique needs, without being constrained by outside investors or rigid third-party frameworks.
This fully integrated approach reduces the risk of delays and errors and supports smoother workflows. And because we manage everything in-house, we can prioritize data quality, security, and speed at every stage of the process. Our commitment to SOC 2 compliance reinforces this—it’s not just a certification, but a rigorous, ongoing process that ensures our clients’ data is handled with the highest standards of protection, transparency, and trust.
Two decades at one company is a long time. What has kept you here for so long?
Andrew: The people—hands down. I genuinely enjoy working with everyone here. There’s a shared mindset from leadership down: we want to solve our clients’ problems and go the extra mile to support them. That commitment is ingrained in our culture. We’re not just trying to hit a quota or tick boxes—we’re really trying to help. That’s what makes the work fulfilling.
Q: We talk about life insurance a lot. What are some of the biggest challenges disability carriers face—and how does ReleasePoint help address them?
Andrew: Many disability carriers are still working with outdated systems, so when they see our tools—structured data, integrated summaries, and faster reviews—it’s a game-changer. Claims are a cost center, and our solutions help carriers make timely, informed decisions by surfacing relevant insights quickly, like identifying return-to-work opportunities or spotting inconsistencies.
We also help reduce reliance on expensive clinical reviews by organizing and summarizing data in a meaningful way. And because timing is critical in disability claims, our ability to speed up access—through traditional retrieval, EHRs, or digital platforms—minimizes delays and lowers operational costs.
Q: Who’s your favorite coworker?
Andrew: [Laughs] That’s an easy one—Derrick, our CEO. He’s not just the leader; he’s a mentor who challenges me to be a better version of myself every day. Derrick’s vision and drive push all of us to raise the bar. Working alongside someone with that kind of passion makes coming to work something I genuinely look forward to.
Q: What do you do for fun outside of work?
Andrew: I’m a big music guy. I’m always listening to something—rock, blues, jazz. Music’s my outlet. It helps me decompress and reset. I recently discovered Kate Wolf, a folk musician who poured her life into her songs during her 10-year recording career. She left us with a beautiful body of work that speaks honestly about the human experience while giving hope and inspiring us to be better. I hope I do the same in all my vocations.
I also enjoy reading—particularly theology. One of my favorite authors is Martin Chemnitz. His writings have a profound way of blending deep philosophical questions with everyday life, which I deeply appreciate.
Q: Any final thoughts on where ReleasePoint is headed?
Andrew: We’re helping carriers bridge from legacy processes to the digital future—without disrupting operations. Whether it’s life, disability, or group benefits, our goal is the same: deliver better data, faster decisions, and real savings. The industry is evolving, and we’re evolving with it—but we’re staying grounded in service, responsiveness, and real results for our clients.
